The first and last car seat you will ever have to buy. The Eddie Bauer Deluxe 3 n 1 Elite is a convertible car seat that grows with your child from infant to toddler mode as well as becoming a belt positioning booster. "LATCH equipped for both rear-facing and forward-facing travel, the 3-in-One Elite Convertible Car Seat safely accommodates a child from birth to age eight and beyond. As recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, this car seat includes a 35-pound turnabout that keeps baby rear-facing until at least age one. The car seat then converts to face forward for toddlers 20-40 pounds, and finally, as baby grows, the car seat coverts again into a belt-positioning booster for children who are 30-100 pounds. For a growing child's comfort, this car seat features a full range of amenities including, a padded headrest, an infant insert for newborns, a cup/juice box holder, and a five-point safety harness. The deluxe three-position recline offers comfort for both infants and toddlers, and the soft armrests flip up and out of the way for easy child positioning. Additionally, the full-wrap tailored pad and soft pillow remove for machine washing.

out of 5 stars Great Seat -- holds up well!, September 30, 2005

Reviewer:   Kelli Hughes (Austin, Texas United States)

After reading all the other reviews, I just had to comment. I have twin girls who are now almost 4 1/2, and they are still using these seats and will continue to use them as boosters shortly. Mine are obviously the older version, so not exactly the same, but these seats have held up well. Mine are the buckle type, not LATCH (I wish they had LATCH when we bought ours, but they didn't). Yes, they are a little hard to install in my minivan bucket seats, but that's just because we have to use a locking clip on ours. Getting them level isn't a problem.

My girls started using these seats at 6 months because they had outgrown their carriers (they were NOT premature, so they were 7 lbs. at birth). The seat doesn't recline a whole bunch, but it is not supposed to. You have to realize that reclining too much is not safe. I believe the recline should be no more than a 45 degree angle to be safe. So, any newborn's head will not stay upright at a 45 degree angle (my head won't either if I fall asleep!!) You have to use some sort of head support besides the one included, which is the case with any car seat. Safety must come first, then comfort!

The fabric is very stain resistant too! I've washed mine, AND I use upholstery cleaner on them all the time (when I don't want to go to the trouble to remove the fabric), and they come clean easily. The padding is sufficient (unlike some car seats) as well, and my girls seem very comfortable in them.

I especially like the fact that you don't have to re-thread the straps to adjust the height, and the straps are easily adjustable in the front of the seat. I don't like the puzzle latch (that's what ours has) because even at age 4, my girls cannot buckle it themselves.

Yes, it is expensive, but since I had to buy two at once, it saved me money in the long run not having to buy additional booster seats. I would recommend this seat for sure. I'm expecting our 3rd child now, and we will probably get the same seat for him unless we can use one of the ones we already have.

out of 5 stars very happy, November 22, 2005

Reviewer:   Amanda (Florida)

My husband and I used this car seat from the time our son was 9 months old and became too tall for his infant carrier. We installed it easily in the rear facing position in our Ford Escape. As far as the tightening problem I read in another review we spent an extra $16 on a Mighty Tite. You simply put this on the seat belt and pull on the lever while pushing down on the car seat until you can't anymore. The car seat doesn't move at all. It is also very comfortable for our son.
Our son is now 23 months old and this seat is great. I can adjust the straps without removing the seat and it only takes 5 minutes to remove the padding for washing and another 5 minutes to put it back together.
Another review said it was impossible to install the seat securely in a bucket seat. This is not true. I have put my son's car seat in a van with bucket seats. All you have to do (rear or forward facing) is remove the base. Then, the seat easily fits in the bucket seat and can be tightened down and secured properly.
We are very happy with this purchase.

out of 5 stars Very frustrating, November 21, 2005

Reviewer:   Mom on the run (Warwick, New York)

I received 2 of these Eddie Bauer 3-in-1 seats for my shower off my registry (Manchester tan color), and thought I was receiving a great seat. Safety wise, I do recommend them, they are a bit bulky, but my 7 1/2 month seemed comfortable in it (he outgrew his infant carrier). The trouble started when I tried to remove the infant headrest - the manual fails to mention that you need to remove the plastic grommets, which I couldn't even get out with a screwdriver. I had to rip them out, and was lucky the fabric did not rip. Once I had my son in the seat, the straps were always stuck underneath him, and he cried as I tried to adjust them, they also tangled. The worst part was the 'puzzle' part that snaps into the seatbelt, I was drenched in the rain trying to line up the puzzle straps! On top of it all, my husband and I could never tighten the harness enough, so my son was just sitting in the seat loose! Then, reading forward in the manual, in case I wanted to wash it, the whole seat needs to come apart, including the booster part, just to remove the cover! It is just not practical for a mother to spend this much time trying to harnes her child in. I returned both and bought the Britax Marathon - what a difference! The seat cover even has velcro on the sides so that the straps can be attached there, and not left lying on the seat! The cover is held on by elastic, so much easier to remove! Strapping my son in is a breeze - WELL worth the extra money!

out of 5 stars REAR FACING - NOT!, November 14, 2005

Reviewer:   X. Hibit "mom of 4" (Chicago, IL)

Ok, so we bought this seat for our 3rd son when he was close to one year old. We never used it rear facing with him. Now that son #4 has come along (a 22 pound 6 month old) we are in desperate need to get him into a new seat. I got this seat out of garage and attempted to install it. Well today was last and final attempt to get this thing not to move around once "secured". I QUIT! It will not fit into my Mercury Monterey bucket seats no matter how hard I try. The back of the seat flops around way too much. There is NOTHING to anchor it from slamming forward making him hit to back of the seat.

So I will be going out and purchasing the Wizard from Britax, it may be pricy, but at least the tether on that one will keep the seat in place!

We have purchased many seats in our days and I would recommend this one for forward facing, but that is it.

out of 5 stars Great Seat fo rthe money, October 25, 2005

Reviewer:   T. Parker "milweiser" (Saugus, CA)

I have 2 of these and I have installed both in rear and forward facing positions with LATCH and without, I can install it in minutes, without a problem, its just a matter of figuring out how to do it, then its a breeze!

Some cars will need a boost for the recline to be right in the rear facing position (as is true with many car seats, including my Tital 5 that the grandparents use), I had to do the same thing with the infant seat) just use a towel or pool worm to get the right recline, again its not a big deal, I never had problems with my childs head falling forward.

Its a great seat for the money, but I dont use the arm rests yet anyways because my daughter is 2 and still doesnt really sit high enough to utilize them, I think it will make more sense when its a booster and she can better climb in on her own.

Oh also, its not too big, I have a tahoe and I have this in the middle and my 2 month old son's infant seat on the side, they fit fine together leaving room to get the other passenger seat down for people to get in the back.
